Brought to you by Off-The-Wahl Toys
"Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend; future events such as these will affect you in the future. You are interested in the unknown. the mysterious.the unexplainable. That is why you are here.. My friend, can your heart stand the shocking facts of grave robbers from outer space?"
-Criswell, Introduction to "Plan 9 From Outer Space", 1959
In 1959 infamous director Edward D. Wood Jr. released what he would
later describe as the "pride and joy" of his film career- "Plan 9 From
Outer Space"- a science fiction/horror story about alien invaders
raising the dead. With its cardboard gravestones, hastily built sets,
bad acting, cheesy flying saucers and campy dialogue the film has
developed a cult status as a kitschy classic. Having been crowned "Worst
Movie Ever Made" by the Golden Turkey Awards while embraced by others as
the work of a misunderstood auteur, Plan 9 continues to captivate and
entertain audiences worldwide.
Now Off-The-Wahl toys commemorates this unique film with a series of 6"
action figures celebrating the bizarre characters and quirky cast that
have helped make "Plan 9 From Outer Space" a B-Movie Classic.
"Plan 9? Ah, yes. Plan 9 deals with the resurrection of the dead. Long
distance electrodes shot into the pineal and pituitary gland of the
recently dead."
-The Ruler, leader of the alien invasion
In "Plan 9 From Outer Space" TV horror hostess Vampira and Swedish
wrestler Tor Johnson rose from the grave, controlled by the alien
invader's electrode guns.
"You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!"
-Eros
"Mad? Is it mad that you destroy other people to save yourselves? You
have done this. Is it mad that one country must destroy another to save
themselves? You have also done this. How then is it "mad" that one
planet must destroy another who threatens the very existence-..."
-Tanna
Dudley Manlove and Joanna Lee suffered through strangely impassioned and
hokey dialogue bringing unique life to the roles of the saucer-piloting
alien invaders who launch Plan 9 against an unsuspecting human race.
"All of us on this Earth know that there is a time to live, and that
there is a time to die. Yet death is always a shock to those left
behind. It is even more of a shock when Death, the Proud Brother, comes
suddenly without warning."
-Criswell
Ed Wood created an unforgettable and confusing final film appearance for
legendary horror star Bela Lugosi by including earlier footage he had
shot in 1956 into the Plan 9 plot. Although it was the last film
footage ever shot of Lugosi who died shortly thereafter, it was never
intended for "Plan 9 From Outer Space".
Because there was so little actual available screen time for Bela,
chiropractor Dr. Tom Mason was asked to fill in the gaps playing Lugosi
by carefully keeping his face covered with a cape in each scene. The
inter-cut scenes of Dr. Tom as Bela Lugosi are laughably mismatched and
apparent.
"Perhaps, on your way home, someone will pass you in the dark, and you
will never know it... for they will be from outer space."
-Criswell
Prophet, futurist, columnist and TV celebrity Criswell provides the
melodramatic narrative of "Plan 9 From Outer Space".
"My friend, you have seen this incident, based on sworn testimony. Can you prove that it didn't happen?"
-Criswell, Concluding Narrative of "Plan 9 From Outer Space", 1959
