Mattel Reports Second Quarter 2012 Financial Results and Declares Third Quarter Dividend

Second Quarter Highlights

  • Worldwide net sales flat;
  • North American gross sales up 1% and International gross sales down 1%;
  • Worldwide gross sales by core brands: Barbie® up 5%; Hot Wheels® up 11%; Fisher-Price® up 2% and American Girl® up 3%;
  • Gross margin increased 340 basis points of net sales; SG&A increased 180 basis points of net sales;
  • Operating income of $131.4 million compared to operating income of $109.3 million in the second quarter of 2011; and
  • Earnings per share of $0.28 vs. prior year earnings per share of $0.23.

Capital Deployment

  • Board declared 2012 third quarter cash dividend of $0.31 per share, reflecting an annualized dividend of $1.24 per share; and
  • The Company repurchased 70,000 shares of its common stock during the second quarter at a cost of approximately $2 million.

First Quarter Highlights

  • Worldwide net sales down 2%;
  • North American1 gross sales down 9% and International gross sales up 7%;
  • Worldwide gross sales by core brands: Barbie® down 6%; Hot Wheels® down 5%; Fisher-Price® flat and American Girl® up 4%;
  • Gross margin increased 130 basis points of net sales; SG&A increased 230 basis points of net sales (includes 170 basis points or approximately $16 million of HIT Entertainment acquisition and integration costs);
  • Operating income of $28.7 million compared to operating income of $36.8 million in the first quarter of 2011; and
  • Earnings per share of $0.02 (includes the negative impact of $0.04 of HIT Entertainment acquisition and integration costs) vs. prior year earnings per share of $0.05.

Capital Deployment

  • Board declared 2012 second quarter cash dividend of $0.31 per share, reflecting an annualized dividend of $1.24 per share;
  • Acquired HIT Entertainment for $680 million; and

SAN RAFAEL, CA – April 9, 2012 – The National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) applauds Mattel's news that it will unveil a doll for children experiencing hair loss. The as yet unnamed doll is a bald friend of the iconic Barbie, and is expected to come with wigs, scarves, hats and other accessories.

The doll will not be available in stores. However, NAAF is scheduled to receive a quantity of the new doll upon release expected in late 2012 or early 2013, as well as a cash donation from Mattel to pay for shipping and administrative costs involved with shipping to children afflicted with alopecia areata. "We are very proud Mattel has selected us to carry this special doll, which will make so many children happy," said NAAF President Vicki Kalabokes.
