Rubik's Cube Turns 25

DANVERS, Mass. -- February 8, 2005 -- Twenty-five years ago, a brightly colored "Cube" made its debut at the American International Toy Fair, looking simple enough but packing an irresistible challenge that would soon attract millions of would-be puzzle sleuths. More than 100 million Rubik's® Cubes have been sold since its debut in 1980, making Rubik's Cube the most successful puzzle in history.

This year, the fun continues with all-new "Cubes" for all ages. Winning Moves Games will launch a 25th Anniversary Edition Rubik's® Cube based on the classic 3x3 Cube at the American International Toy Fair, February 20-23 at the Javits Center (booth #2063) in New York City. For those looking for a greater challenge, Winning Moves Games also markets the Rubik's® 4x4 Cube and Rubik's® 5x5 Cube adding more layers of twisting and turning fun.

In honor of the 25th Anniversary, Winning Moves Games will host "Speed Cubers" from Horace Mann High School at the company's Toy Fair booth. These amazing puzzlers can solve the Cube in 30 seconds or less!

Rubik's Cube is the brainchild of Erno Rubik, a university professor from Hungary, and it took several years for the puzzle to make its way beyond the Iron Curtain.

"I knew when I first saw Erno's Cube creation that it was going to have universal appeal, but it was hard to imagine just how popular it would become," explained Winning Moves Games Chairman Tom Kremer, who helped bring the first Cube to Toy Fair in New York in 1980.

The classic 3x3 Rubik's Cube has 43 quintillion (43,252,003,274,489,856,000) possible configurations, and the fastest time for solving the Cube is a mind-boggling 16.5 seconds! The Cube even inspired a TV series in the 1980s called "Rubik, the Amazing Cube".

Winning Moves Games is a leading maker of classic card games, children's and family games. For more information on Winning Moves Games and Rubik's Cube visit www.winning-moves.com.
