Science of Candy Exhibit

May 2003 -- Whiz kids and candy lovers are invited to explore the science behind the delicious and engaging worlds of candy at Jelly Belly presents CANDY UNWRAPPED, making its first U.S. appearance at the St. Louis Science Center May 24, 2003. The title sponsor of the four-year traveling exhibition is Jelly Belly Candy Company of Fairfield, Calif., makers of more than 100 gourmet confectionery delights.

Jelly Belly presents CANDY UNWRAPPED, an elaborate 6000-square-foot exhibit, is science you can really sink your teeth into and discover 17 interactive areas that challenge the mind as well as the taste buds. Jelly Belly Candy Company supplies jelly beans for the "Who Nose Flavor" section of the exhibit where visitors discover how the sense of smell contributes to the experience of taste.

The Crystal Mountain exhibit, a giant replica of sugar crystals for "rock" climbing, towers over one area, while a huge tongue with musical taste buds invites kids to bounce on the buds to learn where different taste sensations occur in the mouth. Other exciting areas include a super sour candy challenge, an Extreme Candy display, a computerized energy burn, and an area where visitors can design candy wrappers. There are also sweet science-to-go experiments for visitors to take home or mail as postcards.

CANDY UNWRAPPED, an exhibition that satisfies your mind even as it tweaks your taste buds, debuted last year at the prestigious Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, Canada, the world famous science museum known for interactive learning.

The St. Louis exhibit of Jelly Belly presents CANDY UNWRAPPED is not to be missed and is ongoing through September 1, 2003. Following St. Louis, it is scheduled to open in Berkeley, Calif., at the Lawrence Hall of Science October 4, 2003-January 4, 2004. The exhibit will travel to a dozen or more U.S. cities over the next three years. To learn more about the exhibit, log on to the museum's Web site www.slsc.org and on www.jellybelly.com.
