eBay Unveils the Winners of its "Crazy for Collecting" Contest at eBay Live!

June 24, 2004 - New Orleans, LA - eBay celebrates five of the most passionate collectors on eBay at eBay's annual community conference, eBay Live!, held this year in New Orleans. Rachel Armstrong, Bill Cawlfield, Cindy Miller, Kathryn Nuttall, and Margaret Rosack are the first place winners in eBay's inaugural "Crazy for Collecting" contest. The winners won a trip to eBay Live!, including roundtrip airfare, four nights accommodation for themselves and their guests, as well as complimentary registration and VIP access to special eBay Live! events and seminars. The winners collections are on display in the Ernest N. Morial Convention center lobby June 24 to 26 in New Orleans.

Beginning in April, passionate collectors from around the country submitted a 250-300 word essay and a digital photograph of themselves with their collection in the following categories: Antiques, General Collectibles, Pottery & Glass, and "Wildcard." An independent group of judges chose the winners based upon the entrant's passion for collecting, the depth and breadth of the collection, clarity of expression, and originality. The winners are: (click a link to learn more about the winners)

  • Rachel Armstrong, Mystic, CT (Blue Pottery) - The common theme in Rachel's 1,000-piece pottery collection is the color blue. Rachel has gathered everything from mini vases and jugs to big floor vases on eBay.

  • Bill Cawlfield, Highland Ranch, CO (Radios) - Bill's 2,000-piece radio collection spans from pre-World War I to the mid-sixties and includes novelty pieces, radios crafted in retro materials such as Catalin or Bakelite, blue mirrored deco designs, and such true rarities as the Todd-Regency radio given to Shirley MacLaine at the completion of the movie, "Around the World in Eighty Days."

  • Cindy Miller, Southlake, TX (NASCAR memorabilia) - Cindy has two passions in life - her seven-year-old son and NASCAR memorabilia. On eBay, she has been able to build a 400-piece collection both she and her son enjoy, including cars of different sizes, bedding, posters, flags, autographs, carpets, hats and t-shirts.

  • Kathryn Nuttall, Glen Ridge, NJ (Yogi Berra memorabilia) - Yogi Berra certainly has a number one fan in Kathryn Nuttall. Kathryn's 1,200-piece collection includes signed first edition baseball cards, newspapers, magazines, and newswire photographs, all of Yogi.

  • Lynn Rosack, Winter Springs, FL (Trivets) - Trivets comprise Lynn's 400-piece collection and come in many different styles such as iron-shaped spade, circles, and designs that incorporate Pennsylvania Dutch symbolism.

"By hosting the first annual 'Crazy for Collecting Contest,' we have a chance to shine the light on members of our community who exemplify the spirit of collecting," said Dan Neary, director of collectibles for eBay. "The Internet has become an important tool for collectors - with one in five turning to eBay to browse, buy or sell, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by Nielsen. We're delighted to be an integral part of the hunt."

"eBay is an incredible phenomenon," said radio collector Bill Cawlfield. "The online community knows no borders and gives collectors an opportunity to find unusual things from all over the world. I've been able to grow my collection by buying from sellers as far away as England, France, Spain, and Chile. I'm amazed each and every day of the items I uncover; and, I keep coming back for more."
