September 2003 - The Wheeler Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida will be hosting the SubCultures: The Art of the Action Figure exhibit from February 27th to March 17th, 2004. Many Hollywood stars say they know they've made it when they finally see an action figure of themselves. But has the common man gotten lost in the experience of the famous depicted as plastic?
Come and marvel at the "Art of the Action Figure" and see for yourself the microcosm society that has flourished by its wayside.
The purpose of our show is to shine a light on the overlooked artists who dwell in this niche as well as educate the common man on the process of plastic.
Ultimately we provide a "Sales and Marketing"-free environment for artist's own creative ideas to be displayed in it's unadulterated form.
Viewers will be taken on a step by step journey through the process of making an action figure.
The gallery is located at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale's lobby floor so an entire school of 3,600 students is waiting for this monumental exhibit.
Featuring:
Casey Lau
Mister Bany J
Supergenius
Friends With You
Ugly Dolls
Ahn Tran
Urbanimals
And a Top-Secret project from Digger
We will also be giving out an exclusive Art Asylum Minimate! Hooray! This super secret design will be hand crafted by the SubCultures artist! Too cool!
There is still space available for both Art Submission and Advertising! We will be handing out a FREE program to all of the guests and media attending throughout the entire run!
The program will be a 60-page magazine housing interviews of all the artists involved with SubCultures show. (For information about advertising or sponsorships in the program, please contact Jesse DeStasio: Rhunter @ millionaireplayboy.com)
As gallery space fills, it may be necessary to purchase a print ad in order to be in the show. We'd like to avoid this, but this is a student project and we have a shoestring budget. The money from advertising helps to cover the cost of the show and the printing.
Keep in mind there are 3,600 students in the AIFL (the school that houses the gallery where the exhibit takes place) And the magazine's print run will be 5,000 copies.
Anything submitted will not be returned unless arrangements are made.
If you are submitting for the show please respond with the following:
- Lo-res images
- A paragraph explaining:
1) the purpose and essence of your creation,
2) What it is like working in the medium of toys and action figures, and
3) Contact information
4) Sales information (where can people buy them?)
We recommend you ship product ASAP to ensure a personal touch can be used when tailoring your showcase space. Any ideas about how to display as well as graphics surrounding your piece are recommended. Online coverage will be provided by www.MillionairePlayboy.com.
