Spirit: Stallion Toys at BK

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron toys at Burger King

MIAMI, May 23 -- The untamed West comes to life when four action-packed "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" toys arrive in BURGER KING(R) restaurants nationwide on May 27, 2002. The Spirit promotion gets off to a galloping start on the heels of record 2002 first quarter Big Kids Meal sales, which have been rising steadily to a double-digit increase from the previous year. The company attributes this significant increase to successful kid-directed promotional efforts, such as "Spirit," and the development of new menu items intended for young customers.

"We are experiencing outstanding growth in all categories of our kids business with excellent momentum as we move forward," said Rick Dow, senior vice president, marketing programs and sales, Burger King Corporation. "Our kids meal sales are running at close to 20% percent over forecast and we're beginning the summer season with high-profile movie promotions such as DreamWorks' 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron' and we'll follow it up with Columbia Pictures' 'Men in Black II' in July."

For four weeks, while supplies last, BURGER KING(R) Big Kids meals will contain one of four figure-with-viewer toys: Spirit, Little Creek, Colonel and Rain. Each toy comes with a Virtual Vision Scope viewer, a film technique that features unique image-layering technology, and two 3-D viewer cards each featuring four scenes from the film for a total of eight scenes per toy. Once a viewer card is inserted into the Virtual Viewer Scope, kids can look into the lenses and be transported into Spirit's world via 3-D images from the film. The action figures, inspired by scenes from the movie, have movable parts and the human figures can be placed on the horses.

"We're giving kids what they want, where and when they want it in our restaurants, at home, on television, on the Web and in the mail with our Big Kids Club," said Dow. "Each BURGER KING(R) Big Kids promotion is vertically integrated and features a popular, kid-targeted property along with an appealing toy. Our high-quality 'Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron' toys will bring customers of all ages to BURGER KING(R) restaurants."

Burger King Corporation's kid marketing efforts extend from the restaurants to television, radio, the Web and even kids' homes through the largest proprietary kids direct mail database in the world. The company's kids advertising agency of record, Campbell-Mithun, creates spots that appeal to kids between the ages of four and twelve. The BURGER KING(R) "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" promotion will be supported with national kid-directed advertising, in-restaurant communication, in-restaurant merchandising and an interactive micro site at http://www.burgerking.com.

In the spirit of true partnership, Burger King Corporation will also offer coupons in the "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" home video/DVD box, upon its release.

About "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"

"Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" follows the adventures of a wild and rambunctious mustang stallion as he journeys through the untamed American frontier. Encountering man for the first time, Spirit defies being broken, even as he develops a remarkable friendship with a young Lakota brave named Little Creek. The courageous young stallion also finds love with a beautiful paint mare named Rain on his way to becoming one of the greatest unsung heroes of the Old West.

"Kids of all ages are our movie's target audience and the toys available in the BURGER KING(R) Big Kids meals will help extend their experience of the movie beyond the theater," said Anne Globe, Head of DreamWorks Consumer Products Marketing. "'Spirit' is the first of a five picture partnership with Burger King Corporation. We are amazed by the quality and innovation the Burger King Corporation brings to each kids meal premium program."

BURGER KING(R) First Quarter Promotions Timeline

In January 2002, BURGER KING(R) restaurants welcomed the Powerpuff Girls and Dragon Ball Z "Power Pairs" promotion to Big Kids Meals, the first time the fast-food chain offered two separate and distinct toys with every kids meal. In addition to the toys, each Kids' Meal included an exclusive "Orbit" code that kids could use online at the Cartoon Network's Cartoon Orbit Web site. In just the first week of the promotion, participation and redemption broke all records on CartoonNetwork.com, further fueling BURGER KING(R) sales.

By March, BURGER KING(R) restaurants were engulfed by the Ice Age movie with Kids Meal toys and a new menu item: the Blue Cherry Frozen Float. In April, Nickelodeon's Rocket Power zoomed in with a new "for-kids-by-kids" menu item: SHAKE 'EM UP(TM) with Cheezy Flavor Boost. This most recent promotion was closely connected to the Fifteenth Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, which Burger King Corporation sponsored. This year's Kids Choice Awards achieved the highest ratings in the award show's history, and served as the platform to launch SHAKE 'EM UP(TM), delicious, orange-colored, cheese-flavored fries, at BURGER KING(R) restaurants.
