Wolverine III

Year of release: 1992
Figure Number:49741/????
Accessories: Laser-type Pistol
Action Feature: Twist & Slash Waist; Spring out Claws

Comments: This figure, known as Wolverine III, featured a costume briefly worn by Logan in the comics. The claws on this figure were spring loaded and did not stay retracted by themselves. The waist was loose to allow one to pivot the figure by using a finger or thumb on the figure's back.

It is interesting to note that the sculpting of this figure is nearly identical to the body used for Wolverine II. There are only very subtle differences in the details of the body. The action feature is identical as is the weapon accessory. Only the head is significantly different. It is likely that the same mold was used for these two figures, perhaps with some slight retooling.

Interestingly, this figure was released in two consecutive series (Series II & III) during 1992. The figures themselves are identical. However, the figure number differs for each assortment. Although unconfirmed, it is believed that this figure was a short-pack in both assortments. According to official Toy Biz/Marvel information, Wolverine III is the rarest of all the general release version of this character. This is confirmed by many collectors who are seeking this figure for their collections. However, it should be noted that this figure was re-released in 1996 and is easily distinguished from the original release by the copyright date on the cardback. Don't be fooled.

Even more interesting than the re-release itself is the fact that a subset of the re-released figures contain an intriguing abnormality. A good number of the re-released Wolverine III's came with Wolverine II's legs! Very unique variation.
