  • The images below of a hand-painted hard copy are provided by James Gallo, who was also kind enough to share this description:
The hardcopy prototype stage represents an early, key portion within the action figure production process. A silicone mold is made using the original sculpting, which then serves in the generation of a hardcopy. Hardcopies are typically cast in a hard urethane and often pinned together. These hardcopies, however, do not come apart. Each is totally hand poured and hand painted; a true testament to the time and skill required during their creation. These particular pieces are trade show samples which explains their completeness and the amazing detailed paint job. A small handful of hardcopies are produced for use in packaging and catalog photography, industry show display samples (like Toy Fair), and tooling masters. A tooling master, sometimes referred to as a tooling hardcopy, is sent to the orient for use in the generation of steel production molds. Early plastic first shots and engineering pilots are shot from the production molds and upon final debugging the mold is deemed ready for full production.
