The Kubricks by Medicom Toys in Japan has revolutionized the toy market. These larger size Lego-style figures has proven to us that toys could be fun again! During my recent trip to Japan and Hong Kong, one thing that caught my eyes was this set of Kubrick-style Star Wars figures.
Little is known on the origin of these cute figures. The figure size and design is almost identical to the Kubricks, with the only noticeable difference being the hole on the foot missing on these Star Wars figures. They come in 3 individual sets, titled A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of The Jedi. Each set comes in a handsome flip-cover window display box and contains 4 figures and their respective accessories.
- A New Hope comes with Princess Leia, Obi Wan Kenobi, R2-D2, and C-3PO.
- Empire Strikes Back has Han Solo, Boba Fett, Chewbecca, and Stromtrooper.
- Return of the Jedi includes Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Darth Vader, and Emperor.

Return of the Jedi (Yoda, Jedi Luke, Darth Vader, Emperor)Upon examining the packaging, I found neither company name nor copyrights. So, I have no idea who made them and also have doubts if they are fully licensed. But the production quality of these figures is way above your standard bootleg items.
The attention to detail is comparable to any license products. The design and engineer of the figures are as good and smart as the Medicom Kubricks! Luke is in his Jedi outfit and has one hand black and one hand in flesh color, with a removable cloak and a hair piece to add on. The Darth Vader figure comes with a removable helmet that would reveal the scarred face of Anakin Skywalker. All decorations on each figure are done in great detail with crisp screen printing on all parts. I appreciate especially the Boba Fett that they have the backpack sculpted and even has the wookie sculpts!
In true Kubrick style, these sets even include a color backdrop for the figures to pose against. A New Hope set comes with the corridor of the Rebel Blockade, the Empire set comes with the Freezing Chamber, and Jedi comes with the Emperor’s Throne Room.

I asked the retailer the origin of these products and was told that these first pop up at a convention as a one-shot show special made by some Star Wars fans. Not sure how true it is. I wonder if Medicom or anyone will pick up a license to make these nice figures into the general market. What I wish now is to see an Episode 1 set showing up in the next convention! NO JAR JAR THOUGH!
